Description Introduced just before the outbreak of the Second Boer War, the 1899 khaki serge service dress represented the British Army’s first universal field uniform in drab color. It replaced the scarlet tunic and white tropical drill, offering greater practicality for campaigning in South Africa’s dusty veldt. This early service dress became the direct ancestor of the later 1902 pattern khaki uniform. It was issued to both regular and volunteer contingents. Trousers: Matching khaki serge trousers with straight legs. Same as Khaki serge tunics . Button fly front and buttons for braces (suspenders). Side slash pockets.
