Instituted on 1 April 1916 by Emperor Franz Joseph I as a war time decoration. Awarded to civilians and soldiers of lower ranks for outstanding acts and services during WWI. Original Issue - Full Size Medal - Zinc (non-magnetic) Description: Iron cross pattée alisée with a laterally pierced ball suspension on genuine (slightly Faded) military tri-fold ribbon. Obverse: A circular central medallion bearing the initials ‘FJ’ (for Emperor Franz Joseph I, 1848-1916) encircled by a ring bearing the inscription ‘VIRIBUS UNITIS’ (strength through unity). Reverse: A circular central medallion bearing the date 1916 within a circular ring with a stylized laurel wreath. HISTORY OF THE AWARD: Instituted on 1 April 1916 in two grades (with and without Crown)...as a perceived need for a grade below the existing Gold and Silver, rewarding those of lower ranks performing exceptional acts and services, especially in the support and auxiliary services.
