This is an authentic WW1 Wound Badge, Tombac in Black, Cut-out. The Wound Badge was instituted by Wilhelm II to reward and recognize the sacrifice of German Military personnel wounded in active service during World War I. Note: Adolf Hitler was awarded the wound badge during his service in WWI. Variants: Gold Badge: Conferred for five or more wounds (or lost a limb). Silver Badge: Conferred for three or fours wounds. Black Badge: Conferred for one or two wounds. Description: An oval badge constructed of blackened tombac & unmarked. Obverse: Depicts a M35 Stahlhelm (Steel Helmet) centered over crossed swords on a pebbled field with laurel branch wreath. Reverse: Vertical pin-back w/functional hinge/catch assembly.
