This Journal was largely written by Gustavus Adlerfeld, Chamberlain to Charles XII, King of Sweden, chronicling his activities during the Great Northern War of 1700–1721. It was originally written in Swedish, later translated to French, and in 1740 translated into English. That is the version edited and annotated here by Roger Reynolds.Volume Three starts in January, 1708 as the Swedish army is about to invade Russia. The battles of Holowczyn, Malatitze and Lesnaya are covered. The horrendous winter march and fighting of 1708-1709 is discussed in detail, as is the January 1709 capture of Veprik. Chamberlain Adlerfeld's Journal ends the night before the Battle of Poltava, where he was killed.Through five appendixes, the story of the battle of Poltava and the retreat of Charles XII to the Turkish town of Bender, in present-day Moldavia, this third volume was finished by other writers, who, unfortunately, are not identified.
