This Journal was largely written by Gustavus Adlerfeld, Chamberlain to Charles XII, King of Sweden, chronicling his activities during the Great Northern War of 1700–1721. It was originally written in Swedish, later translated to French, and in 1740 translated into English. That is the version edited and annotated here by Roger Reynolds. Volume One discusses the lead up to, and causes of, the Great Northern War 1700-1721.Starting in 1700, it covers the Swedish landing at Humlebaek and subsequent surrender of Denmark, the key Battle of Narva (Nov. 1700); the Swedish crossing of the Duna River, the battles of Rauge and Eraster (1701); the battles of Klissow, Hummelshof and Noteburg in 1702; the battles of Pultusk, Nyenskans, Systerback, and siege of Torun (Thorn) in 1703; the battles of Dorpat, Wesenberg and Jakobstat in 1704. It concludes with the Russian recapture of Narva in August, 1704. Title: The Military History of Charles XII King of Sweden, Vol. 1.
