This is a five volume set of hardcover books sold originally by the United States Postal Service to document and commemorate the 50th anniversary of World War II between 1991 and 1995. The set of five volumes comes in a slip case, and each volume aside from being a commemorative book also includes a complete set of mint never hinged USPS 50th anniversary World War II stamps issued for that year. The books serve as an album to showcase each set of stamps and include space for one complete sheet of 10 stamps plus map, and all 10 stamps and map individually. There are 100 stamps total in this five volume set. These stamps remain valid to this day and at face value alone could be used for up to $15 in postage. The associated Scott catalog numbers for each commemorative sheet are 2559, 2697, 2765, 2838 and 2981. World War II was the most significant event of the 20th century. The U.S. Postal Service began planning for the war's 50th anniversary in 1985. It wanted to honor the key events of the war effort as well as the various aspects of national endeavor that contributed to Allied victory. But how to do that without producing a thousand stamps?The answer was a series of sheetlets, one for each year of the war, that consisted of a large center map framed by five stamps on the top and five on the bottom.
