Confederate States of America (1862) $100 (T39) Banknote - Authentic

$57.87 $82.18
This is an authentic Confederate States of America (CSA) $100 (T39) banknote, issued on 3 August 1862. It's a Fourth Series banknote deriving from the Act of 17 April 1862 by Engraver Hoyer & Ludwig (Richmond, VA) & Publisher J.T. Patterson (Columbia, S.C.). A total of 284,000 were issued. Issued during the American Civil War (1862), it states that, six months after the ratification of a treaty of Peace between the Confederate States and the United States, the Confederate States will pay $100 to the bearer (w/interest) at 2-cents/day, highlighting the Confederacy's reliance on a future peace treaty for redemption of the note. Measurements: Length: 7 1/2" Height: 3 1/4" Obverse: The note features a vignette of a train w/straight steam, representing transportation and commerce while a woman (milkmaid) is depicted at the left, possibly symbolizing agriculture or prosperity. The bottom includes signature lines for the Register and Treasurer, indicating its official issuance by the Confederate government. Reverse: Blank, as printed. However, this note is stamped post-issuance with, "Interest paid to 1 January 1863" & Interest paid to 1 January 1865 (indicating the bearer claimed interest on the note each annum). Historical Context: CSA currency was relegated worthless & became obsolete as legal tender following their defeat in the Civil War. However, they represent a part of the financial history of the CSA during the American Civil War & thus these banknotes have become collector's pieces. ————————————————--------- Confederate States of America (1862) $100 (T39) Banknote - * Authentic * $68.00 A total of 284,000 were issued. ————————————————----------
