Description General Service Medal, GVI, bar Malaya, Lieut Dr Andrew Buchanan Young, MB ChB FRCPE FFPHM R.A.M.C. Honorary Physician to EIIR and Scotland Deputy Chief Medical Officer    Officially impressed: “Lt A.B. Young. R.A.M.C.”   Provenance, ex Noonans 19th April 2023, described as a “Slightly later issue struck on a thinner flan”.   The medal is unworn in original card box of issue and with a matching miniature medal, riband bar also his original Driving Permit   First registered as a Doctor on 14th July 1950, 51 Titwood Road Glasgow S.1, having passed his M.B. Ch.B. in 1950 at the University of Glasgow.   Commissioned as a Lieutenant in the Royal Army Medical Corps on 20th August 1951.   Shortly after promoted to Captain dated 20th August 1952.   He also has a “War Department Driving Permit” which is included and shows that he saw service in Malaya attached to the 1/10th Princess Mary’s Own Gurkha Rifles, dated 30th March 1953 – 29th March 1954.   6th August 1954 London Gazette noting: “Capt Andrew Buchanan Young MB from Army Emergency Reserve of Officer National Service List to be Captain 17th June 1954, retaining his present seniority.”     Edinburgh Gazette 21st May 1993, becoming Honorary Physician to Queen Elizabeth EIIR:   “The Counsellors of State acting on behalf of The Queen have been pleased to approve that the following be appointed Honorary Physicians to Her Majesty for a period of 3 years from 10th May 1993 – Andrew Buchananan Young Esquire MB ChB FRCPE FFPHM Deputy Chief Medical Officer, Scottish Office (Home and Health Department).”   A brief retirement notice from the Health Bulletin 1998: “… has been appointed as Deputy Chief Medical Officer with major responsibility for publish health matters in succession to Dr Andrew Young who retired in September after 22 years of outstanding service in the Scottish Office.”   University of Glasgow Calendar 1983 notes: “Honorary Clinical Lecturer on Orthopaedics”
