Description Afghanistan 1878-80, bar Ahmed Khel, Army LSGC, VR, 15B/200 Private William Gibson, 59th (2nd Nottinghamshire) Regiment of Foot, from Armagh. Afghan officially engraved: “15 B/200 Pte W. Gibson. 59th Foot” LSGC officially impressed: “15th Bde 200 Pte W. Gibson, 59th Foot” William Gibson was born in Armagh, Ireland circa. He served 22 years 85 days of which 21 years and 127 days were spent overseas consisting of: East Indies, 20 Years 58 Days Afghanistan, 1 Year 69 Days. He was discharged at his own request on completion of his service. “His conduct has been very good, he is in possession of 5 good conduct badges, he is in possession of a Silver Medal for Long Service and Good Conduct. He is not in possession of a school certificate.” A model soldier, he was never mentioned in the Regimental Defaulters Book or tried by Court Martial. He originally enlisted at Portadown into the 82nd (Princes of Wales’s Volunteers) Foot on 9th January 1858. He would re-engage at Kangra for 11 years 173 days to complete his 21 years term on 20th July 1867. He transferred over to the 41st Foot on 1st August 1869. Before he volunteered to transfer over to the 59th Regiment on 31st August 1873. Becoming part of what was known as the “15th Brigade” (59th Regt) to finish out his career from 1st September 1873 – 2nd April 1880.
