Compensating Euphonium Compensating Euphoniums are essentially a 3 valve instrument with the 4th valve for the lower register designed to “compensate” for the euphonium’s natural tendency to go sharp in the lower range. This allows the player to use the same fingerings with the “compensating valve” also depressed for the lower octave of the instrument as they would for the upper octave with excellent pitch stability, in lieu of alternate fingerings.
