This work was originally published in German by General Alfred von Schlieffen in 1904 and in 1931 was translated into English by the US Army War College. This edition by Roger Reynolds is an edited and annotated version of the rare 1931 translation. Volume 1 begins with a short discussion of the battle of Cannae, fought by Hannibal against the Romans in 216 BC, then Frederick the Great's battle of Zorndorff, and Napoleon's battle of Austerlitz, using them as a basis for the concept of Vernictungskrieg, the war of annihilation, as fought on the battlefield. With this as a basis, the man who designed the famous "Von Schlieffen Plan" for the invasion of France in 1914 proceeds to demonstrate how the Prussians used this concept in the 1866 campaign against Austria and the 1870 campaign against France. Volume 1 covers only the Prusso-Austrian war of 1866.
