A modern classic military history of an obscure European colonial conflict. Winston Churchill was a junior officer during this war. It is a history of the conquest of the Sudan between 1896 and 1899 by Anglo-Egyptian forces led by Lord Kitchener. He defeated the Sudanese Dervish forces, led by Khalifa Abdallahi ibn Muhammad, heir to the self-proclaimed Mahdi Muhammad Ahmad who had vowed to conquer Egypt and drive out the Ottomans. This is an excellent book, and Churchill's military analysis, and insight into behavior compared to historical perspective, is outstanding. This is Churchill writing and, even though it is an early example in his literary career, it is a lesson in the graceful use of the English Language. Beautifully descriptive phrases, pungent political comments, extraordinary attention to the details of numerous military campaigns and an underlying, cynical, humour throughout this account of a long forgotten war. Noticeable and laudable is Churchill's insistence in describing the bravery of the warriors of both sides with admirable equanimity.
