Description The Type AN-J-3 Flight Jacket was developed in 1943 as a joint standard between the U.S. Army Air Forces (USAAF) and U.S. Navy (USN) to unify their leather flight clothing systems. Intended to replace both the A-2 and the Navy M-422A, the AN-J-3 combined the best features of each.Crafted from premium seal-brown goatskin leather, it features a zip-front closure, bi-swing back for mobility, and knitted wool cuffs and waistband for warmth. The design retains the clean, shirt-style collar of the A-2 but omits the mouton fur typical of Navy jackets. Its lighter weight and durability made it ideal for both land-based and carrier aviation use in late WWII, though limited production kept it less common than its predecessors.
