The book undertakes a detailed and comprehensive history of U.S. armored forces from their inception in the First World War through the Second World War, Korea, Vietnam and the Cold War, to Operation Desert Storm, a convenient and illustrative stopping point in the narrative. Different authors are responsible for the chapters, which provide a wide-ranging and brutally honest view of the development and employment history of U.S. armored forces. There are plenty of lessons learned and not learned on the often inefficient and politicized ways that forces and weapons are fielded. There are many lessons here for the student of history and for the practitioner of the operational level of war.The editors decision to have contributors discuss not only history, but also doctrinal and technological development of American armor. This makes for a volume which will be of interest to both amateurs and professionals. Second, the choice of contributors could not, in my opinion, have been much better. Lastly, the inclusion of chapters dealing with the history and development of armor in the U.S. Marine Corps is an often overlooked area of discussion.
