Description Afghanistan 1878-80, bar Ali Musjid, 1373 Private Samuel Smith, 1st Bn 17th Regiment of Foot, aka the Leicester Regiment. Officially engraved: “1373 Pte S. Smith. 1/17th Regt” Confirmed on the medal roll. Samuel Smith is recorded as serving with the 1st 17th Regiment during 1871 whilst stationed at Lucknow in India. The regiment had arrived in India during 1870 and remained there until they were deployed to Afghanistan for the war during 1878. They earned the battle honour and clasp “Ali Musjid” for their part in the Battle of Ali Masjid on 21st November 1878, the opening battle of the war, the force capturing the fortress of Ali Musjid, an important stronghold in the region.
