Empress of India 1877

$46.58 $75
Description Empress of India, 1st January 1877, Silver, the impressive large neck badge awarded upon the occasion of Queen Victoria becoming the Empress of India.    This magnificent and unusual large silver medal, which has a diameter of about 58mm and made from silver was a rare issue and given on the occasion of Queen Victoria ascending to the title of Empress of India during the 1877 Delhi Durbar.   A small number of medals were awarded in Gold to select officials and Indian Royalty.    The silver medals were only issued in small numbers to selected British and Indian Officers and Civilians, with an award being made to typically only 1 deserving soldier of each British and Indian Regiment serving in India at the time.   An excellent example fitted with a very long old neck ribbon.
